JMJ-Dolls to Dress: Kewpie and Scootles

DOLLS TO DRESS
KEWPIE and SCOOTLES by Judy M Johnson
Now On Archival CARDSTOCK!

We've been getting more requests for Dress-A-Dolls, so I put two sweet dollies that I have painted, obviously inspired by Rose O'Neill. The Kewpie was painted first, for B. Shackman; the Scootles appeared in OPDAG's book "21 Paper Doll Artists" 2006.

We were able to fit FOUR dolls on one 8.5x11" cardstock laser sheet. 75 pound, HP bright white archival paper that is a dream to cut! No cracking when you cut, and no popping off of inks. Fun to make clothes for with your drawings, paintings, crafting, and collage work. Comes in a clear, archival 3-ring binder sleeve.

Judy M Johnson is an internationally renowned paper doll artist, having been published by national companies including: B. Shackman; Dover Publications; Scott Publications; Collector Communications; Magicloth Toys; Schylling Toys; and Paper Studio Press-owned and operated by Judy's daughter, Jenny Taliadoros.(www.paperdollreview.com) Additionally,  she has written for: National Doll World; Artists Magazine; Dolls Magazine; Contemporary Doll; Ceramics Monthly;  Paper Doll Review; Paper Doll Studio (www.opdag.com); and others.

The story of Rose O’Neill reads like a fairy tale. Cecilia Rose O’Neill was born in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania in 1874. At the age of 14, Rose entered a contest sponsored by the Omaha World Herald for the best drawing by a Nebraska school child and ended up winning a five dollar gold piece. By the early 1890’s Rose began selling her drawings to publications, eventually going to New York where she sold many illustrations to such periodicals as Colliers, Truth, Life, and Harpers. In 1909 Rose created Kewpies®, which appeared in the Christmas issue of The Ladies Home Journal. They then appeared regularly in the Woman’s Home Companion and Good Housekeeping for the next 25 years resulting in a merchandising boom that lasted for decades and included everything from dolls to doorknockers. Nearly 100 years after their creation, Kewpies® are still produced and beloved by collectors worldwide.
