Hollywood Costume Paper Doll Book
from Paper Studio Press
by Judy M Johnson
This book was a ton of fun to research and paint for my daughter, Jenny's company, Paper Studio Press. She arranged licensing through Betty's estate and asked me to paint it. I LOVE Betty Hutton's films and came to love the lady more, after all the research I did about her. What a character! She had the energy and vibrant expressions of a child. She could make you laugh at her antics or break your heart with her sweetness. I think I portrayed her sweetness and vulnerability in the paper doll, and showed a glimpse of her rascal-ness in her cover portrait. All the costumes are from her flms, designed by Edith Head and Helen Rose, and one by Rene duBois, from several films.
The image above is my version as presented to the publisher, but it has been changed a bit in the finished book, on backgrounds, lettering and with additional photos of the lovely star.
There's a bio of the lady inside the back cover, written by David Wolfe (with some additions by moi.) I have included clips of photos of Betty wearing all but one of the costumes that are represented in the book. A green robe I sketched from a movie so did not have a photo from which to work. I scoured the web to find the correct colors for the mostly black and white photos that were sent by the inheritors of Betty's estate. (She left very little, but there still IS her image and her wonderful film history!!)
Comes signed by the artist, of course. Tell me if you want it personalized with your name.
Interesting biography of the star by David Wolfe fills inside the back cover. Bio of the artist is inside the front cover. Commercially printed with heavy cardstock covers, and nice paper stock for clothes. Finished size of stapled book: 9.5" x 11.5". Ready for you to cut. No perforating or die-cutting. Get one to keep and one to cut!
FYI- Here's a delightful note from one of my collectors...just had to brag and show it to you:
OH, Judy, I just had to tell you (as I told Jenny on Friday), I just think your BETTY HUTTON is the BEST work you have ever done! What a beautiful, beautiful book. It is most definitely my favorite among this latest batch of Jenny's. Because I was in Florida during the holidays, I didn't order any of them until this past week, so this was the first I had seen of them. And what a pleasant surprise! I hope you continue to do more books for Jenny, as well as for Judy's Place (I have my eye on a couple of your 1930s folios). Your dolls always have the sweetest expressions on their faces, and your vintage clothes are simply fabulous.
Warm regards, Alina
