MUTSIKO'S FAMILY, CHERRY BLOSSOM TIME
JAPANESE PAPER DOLL
Restored late 50s Paper Doll of Japan
I LOVE this book! The sweetest face on the cover! It's another from my mom's collection. She bought it in Phoenix at a flea market in the 80s.There is extensive work done on this book to freshen the colors, clean up overprinted edges, and do new, clear color backgrounds. The book read from back to front...Japan style, so I arranged it so the cover is where we are used to seeing it. There were some writings on each page which I cannot read, so I decided who is who. As there's a celebratory pop-toy on each page, I thought that a festival must be involved, so I picked the ancient and very popular Cherry Blossom Festival. Entire families enjoy the event's food and entertainments. Wonderfully colorful traditional clothing is worn to the event.
There are also western style clothes for (all but Honorable Mother) the family members: Honorable Father, Elder sister, Two little children- boy and girl, and a middle size girl I have named Mutsiko, (pronounced Moo'-tsee-ko) after a college girl from Japan, we knew back in the 50s. There is also a housekeeper page with a modern vacuum cleaner, and a page of furniture.
What you can't see in the tiny pics above, is the little girl on the cover is playing with paper dolls! A piece in each hand, and two more on her lap. How cute is that!
All the figures have heavy black edges around simple designs, so it can be a nice project to do with kids. Each page has back/front dolls and clothes. You cut them all out, Paste the front and back of the figure together. Then for costumes, fold over the tabs (on one side and on one shoulder of each outfit) then paste the tabs and stick the back to the front. This leaves an open side for which to slip the outfit onto the doll.
These brilliant colors and patterns are gorgeous laser printed. Stapled book, 8.5"x11"- a tad larger than the original. All archival materials- won't fade or brown with age. Covers on 80# coverstock, costume pages on 32#. Top grade, satin finished papers. Stored in crystal clear Mylar seal-top bag.
